Exploring Vocation

What does God want me to do with the rest of my life? This is a question most thoughtful Christians will ask from time to time. One possible answer is, "to serve him through the ministry of his Church" although this is but one way God calls us to serve him. Indeed its easy to forget that God needs many more people with vocations to serve him in the world beyond the church.

For those who feel called to serve God in his church, that ministry is now very varied and includes a number of lay ministries as well as the different forms of service that can follow ordination.

Lay ministries include those relating to worship, preaching, prayer, pastoral care and evangelism. Ordination can lead to Stipendiary, Non-Stipendiary, Ordained Local ministry and Ministry in Secular Employment in the Church of England and their equivalents in other denominations.

Are you beginning to explore a sense of vocation to one of these ministries? If so, we recommend attending a vocations discernment course. These take many forms and are run by a variety of organisations locally and nationally.

Nationwide Vocations Courses

  1. CPAS (Church Pastoral Aid Society) offers weekend Vocation Courses that focus particulary on ordained ministry in the Church of England. These are held in various locations around England.
  2. Trinity College in Bristol offers a Vocations Weekend in the Easter Vacation. This covers both lay and ordained vocations but with a Church of England flavour.
