Reader Training

All new Church of England Readers in the Dioceses of Gloucester and Hereford have a three-year course with WEMTC. Some Worcester Diocesan Readers in Training also join WEMTC. Readers are lay people who are trained and licensed by the Diocese to preach and lead worship as well as carry out some forms of pastoral ministry in the Church. For more detail on Readers we recommend that you visit the national website for Readers. Readers in training must first be selected through the Readers' Board. If you are interested in Reader training we recommend you start by talking to your minister.

Each Diocese organises its own pattern of training. Currently both groups of Readers join ordinands for their weekly programme with the chance to gain Certificate in Christian Studies. There are also separate modules for particular Reader skills.

If you are a current reader in training with WEMTC then have a look at the Reader Home Page for information of particular relevance to you.

Where do classes take place?

Residential Weekends

Ludlow and Cheltenham-based Readers have an annual joint residential weekend. Readers at the Cheltenham Centre have additional Weekends. There are also occasional Saturday programmes in more practical skills such as leading worship and preaching. Cheltenham-based Readers will also have extra weekends.

Placements

Additionally students do a placement, usually some time in their second year in a church different from the one they have come from. This is a good opportunity to try out skills in a new environment and see how others go about ministry. It is usually a highlight of training.
