Understanding WEMTC Modules

A module is an educational unit which forms a credit bearing part of the Course. Each module has a defined class syllabus and some means of assessment. Those who pass the assessment will be awarded credits towards a Certificate or Diploma. WEMTC taught modules are normally taught through evening classes. A full taught module gains 15 credits and usually consists of 20 one hour lectures (one night per week for 10 weeks). A half module is, of course, half this.

WEMTC offers a core of 14 taught modules (some half modules worth 7.5 credits and some full modules worth 15 credits). There are normally three modules on offer at one time at a particular Centre. Ordinands are expected to complete all fourteen standard taught modules along with the other requirements for their course during their three years with WEMTC. Readers do twelve credit bearing modules and Foundation Students do five. Independent students need to collect 120 credits worth of modules. Those on other tracks within WEMTC such as Ordained Local Ministers will do a proportion of the Modules as set by the Local Ministry Office Those with prior theological qualifications may be able to be credited with certain courses (normally the Introductory modules) via a system of APL (Accredited Prior Learning) and instead participate in alternative modules.

Some of our modules are also open to associate students who are simply interested in the subject.

The Four Introductory Modules

We recommend that all students start with these first four intoductory modules unless they have significant prior theological study or experience in the module field.

Autumn Term

Doing Theology

This module introduces students to the key skills and resources (e.g. Scripture, Tradition, experience, reason) for the practice of Christian theological reflection. It considers the spiritual goals of such Reflection and its place in a multi-faith world.

Spring or Summer Term

Introduction to the First Testament

This module gives an overview of the biblical First Testament narrative and an introduction to current methods and issues in biblical studies. Selected books and themes will be introduced and set in their historical and literary contexts with attention to their potential application today.

Introduction to the New Testament

This module gives an overview of the New Testament content and an introduction to current methods and issues in biblical studies. Selected books and themes will be introduced and set in their historical and literary contexts with attention to their potential application today.

Spring or Summer Term

Introduction to the Christian Tradition

What do Christians believe and how did those beliefs develop? This course explores these questions through an introduction to the history of the early Church and an introduction to the main areas of Christian doctrine. The questions posed by contemporary thought are part of this course, as are the ways in which Christians explain their faith.

Other Level One Modules

In the second and third years of study, Certificate students complete further University Level One modules from the following list. Please click on the link to find out more about these modules.

The following modules are required ministerial modules for Ordinands and Readers and so will run most years:

The following modules are alternative modules that may run if there is sufficient demand and an available tutor:

Level 2 Modules

Ordinands work towards a Diploma which requires 120 credits at Level Two. The following modules are offered at level two. Many of them are also offered at level one so that a class will consist of Diploma and Certificate students. There will be separate assignments and Diploma students will be expected to interact in class at a higher, more critical level than Certificate students. Some modules are only available at level two. Non-ordinands on the Certificate Course, who prove themselves able to handle level two work may with the approval of their core staff member undertake the level two assignments rather than the level one versions. They will still get the Certificate but their Transcript will indicate that work has been done at a higher level. This may be beneficial to people who are considering further study and want to upgrade to a degree or undertake Ordination training etc. in the future. The following are additional level two modules that may run if there is sufficient demand and an available tutor:

Ministry Modules

In addition to the above modules there are also a range of Ministry related modules that are only available to Ministry students on particular tracks:

The following modules are offered at level one:

The following modules are offered at level two:

The following modules do not individually carry credits but contribute towards the credits obtained from Competence and Formational Modules listed above
