WEMTC Library
Good library facilities are important for study and WEMTC invests substantial sums each year in maintaining libraries at Cheltenham and Ludlow. In addition students are able to obtain borrowing rights from a variety of other libraries. For Bristol Students the main library resource is the Wesley College Library part of the Bristol Federation Libraries. Cheltenham students have direct access to the WEMTC Cheltenham Book Collection, WEMTC's main library resource. While Ludlow students have use of the library at the Bishop Mascall Centre which is jointly funded by the Hereford Diocesan Board of Education's Resource Centre and WEMTC. The WEMTC library may be able to offer borrowing rights to external users for a small fee.
All WEMTC students have borrowing rights from the Cheltenham Collection provided they have applied for and obtained (free of charge) a learning centre card. (This card also entitles students to use the photocopiers at 10p a sheet and the inter-campus bus). They may borrow:
- Directly from the Collection at the Francis Close Campus at the opening times below.
- From Book boxes sent to Ludlow or Bristol
- Via our web page Book Reserve Request email. This goes to the Office where Sue will endeavour to get you the book via your Centre tutor. It may therefore take some time for books to reach you. Eventually we hope that the University will run a mail ordering system and you will be advised if this is arranged.
Please note this does not entitle you to take any other books out from the University although you may read their books on site. To borrow University books see the Francis Close Learning Centre below.
Loan Entitlements
WEMTC students are allowed:
- 6 books at a time
- a 3 week loan period
Renewals can be made by phone to the University Issues Desk 01242 532 721 or via
the University Webcat. Fines will be imposed for overdue books.
Library Organisation
The Library uses the Dewy Decimal system followed by the first 3 letters of the author's surname. Most Theology books are in the 200 range and similar subjects are grouped together e.g. First Testament is 220s, Ethics 241 etc. Books show their number on the spine and are ordered numerically/ alphabetically in the room. When using the online catalogues you will need to note down this call number in order to find the book on the shelf.
External Borrowers
It is possible for external borrowers to use the WEMTC book collection at the Francis Close Learning Centre for a small borrowing charge currently £20 per annum. If you would like an application form please email our office (office @ wemtc.freeserve.co.uk) indicating
- that you would like an application form for library access
- your name
- your address
- the purpose for which you wish to use the library
- your connection with our area.
Alternatively you may like to apply to be an external user of the University Learning Centre (Library) and use the more extensive University resources.
The main WEMTC library collection is housed at the University of Gloucestershire, Francis Close Campus in Cheltenham as a separate collection in the main University Learning Centre. Only WEMTC students may borrow books from the collection but all may read. A map can be found in the map section of the Handbook

Current Catalogue
The WEMTC Book Collection is included as part of the University catalogue but under a separate section of the catalogue. AN online search facility is available from the University online catalogue, which will also indicate availability. Students should logon with their library id and a pin number which must be applied for at the Issues Desk. At the General Search page choose learning centre: West of England Ministerial Training Centre. Under requests you can reserve/hold a book but you will need to pick it up from the Learning Centre yourself. To order a book that is is on the catalogue email (office @ wemtc.freeserve.co.uk) but please note it may take a couple of weeks for the book to reach you.
You can:
- Search the catalogue for a particular author (e.g. Brueggemann)
- Search the catalogue for a particular key word (e.g. Psalms)
For human help in locating books those with WEMTC borrowing rights can email library @ wemtc.freeserve.co.uk directly. But please do not burden our staff unnecessarily.
Guests or those with no learning card can log on as 'guest' (no password needed) and search our catalogue to see if we own a book.
Please remember to chose 'WEST OF ENGLAND MINISTERIAL TRAINING COURSE' as the learning centre otherwise you will see all the University stock.
Please note that we no longer have our own librarian. Please use your Centre libraries as first port of call. The office staff will deal with your request as soon as they are able to and the book will be brought to your Centre by your tutor. The process may take a couple of weeks so please book early. We hope in future that the University will be able to take orders and deliver them to the office.
Students and staff of WEMTC have access to other library facilities that include:
