Independent/ Certificate Study

WEMTC has a long history of training men and women for a range of ministries in the Church of England and Free Churches. Our evening classes are open to all those who want to deepen their understanding of the Bible, the Christian faith and the life of the church. Those interested may join a class that is of particular interest for a term or may join for a longer period and work towards an accredited Certificate.

If you are a current independent Certificate student in training with WEMTC then have a look at the Certificate Student Home Page for information of particular relevance to you.

For those with no prior theology training we recommend joining our first year introductory modules (Doing Theology followed by Introduction to First Testament and New Testament and Introduction to the Christian Tradition). These can then be followed by specialist modules in e.g.: Isaiah, Matthew, Liturgy, Ethics, Trinity, Reformation Studies etc

WEMTC's evening courses are now validated by the University of Gloucestershire. 15 credits are awarded per full module i.e. 10 weeks of lectures and the completion of two 2000 word essays. On completion of the equivalent of eight full modules (i.e. 120 credits) the CertHE in Christian Ministry and Theology is awarded. This normally takes three years of part-time study.

The Modules

The following modules are on offer at each of the WEMTC centres. It is recommended that new students begin with Doing Theology in Autumn and complete the other three introductory courses before attempting the more specialised subjects. However if you have a particular interest in a subject or prior theological or academic qualifications we would be happy to consider applications for direct entry to any of our modules.

Doing Theology(Autumn Term)

A general introduction to thinking theologically and the recommended starting place for study.

Introduction to the First Testament

A general introduction to the Old Testament (studied as the First Testament so as not to give the impression that it is old and irrelevant)

Introduction to the New Testament

A general introduction to the New Testament

Introduction to the Christian Tradition

An introduction to what Christians believe and how those beliefs developed.

Specialist Modules

There are a variety of specialist modules that follow these introductory modules. The following are some of the main subjects we offer:

New Testament Texts: Matthew

A chance to study the Gospel of Matthew in more depth including his distinctive theology.

First Testament Texts: Isaiah

A chance to study the Book of Isaiah and how it fits in with other Prophetic Books and the New Testament.

Worship and Liturgy

The theory and practice of worship looking especially at the sacraments of Baptism and Eucharist.

The Word in Worship: Preaching

An Introductory Course on the art and craft of preaching

Christian Living

An introduction the main principles of Christian Ethics and contemporary ethical issues.

Pastoral Care from Cradle to Grave

A survey of pastoral ministry in the light of the insights of psychology and the human sciences

The Person and Work of Christ

A look at what the Bible and the Church have said about who Christ is and what his life and death achieved.

Denominational Studies

A study of Anglicanism and/or Methodism including its history, doctrines and major issues.

Reformation Theology

A look at the history of the Reformation and the beliefs and issues that caused the creation of the protestant denominations.

There are also additional modules that are run on demand. See our Modules Page for more details of the Modules that have been validated or our Certificate Page for what is involved in gaining the Certificate.

Where and when do classes take place?

One module involves 10 weeks of study, i.e. one term. Lectures start at 7:30pm and finish at 10pm. There is a half- hour coffee break at 8:30pm. Independent students are also invited to join the ordination students for worship at 7pm.

Cost

80 pounds per term for the 2003/2004 Academic Year.
